The Maserati Tipo 60/61 was built by Officine Alfieri Maserati in Modena from 1959 until 1961. Also known under the infamous name Maserati “Birdcage” a remark to the unusual, only 30 kilogram, heavy tubular frame by Giulio Alfieri, that consists of more than 200 razor-thin steel tubes. With this construction Maserati achieved a similar cohesiveness as a principal and more expensive Monocoque. A specialty of the Maserati frame is, that without the actual body, the shape of the car can still be clearly recognized. The hood of the “birdcage” is very flat, despite having a front engine; the reason is that the straight four cylinder engine is built in with a 45 degree slant. As a result the air stream proceeds very beneficial, due to the combination of the narrowly enclosed front wheels and the tear off edge at the back. With this car the Italian brand dominated the racing scene at the beginning of the sixties, whereby the name Maserati is often mentioned in combination with teams just like Camoradi (Casner Motor Racing Division) and Cunnigham. In addition to that the Maerati Tipo when the 1000 km race at the Nurburgring twice.
